Improving the mechanical properties of resin modified glass ionomer cement
(RMGIC) repair materials have been carried out, one of which is by adding nanohydroxyapatite.
Nano-hydroxyapatite is a biomaterial of calcium phosphate
compounds with a powder size of less than 100 nm which can be synthesized from
natural materials, namely tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) scales. Tilapia scales were
synthesized by calcination process to obtain hydroxyapatite powder, size reduction
using a ball mill machine to obtain nano-hydroxyapatite powder (51.71 nm). The aim
of the study was to determine the difference in the surface hardness of RMGIC after
adding 2%, 5% and 8% of nano-hydroxyapatite by weight of tilapia (Oreochromis
niloticus) scales. The research method is a laboratory experiment with a post test only
control group design. The research sample is in the form of tablets with a diameter of
5 mm and a height of 2 mm. There were four groups of research samples namely group
1 (without the addition of hydroxyapatite), group 2 (addition of nano-hydroxyapatite
of 2%), group 3 (addition of nano-hydroxyapatite of 5%) and group 4 (addition of nanohydroxyapatite
of 8%) respectively. Each group consists of 10 samples. The ratio of
RMGIC powder:nano-hydroxyapatite:liquid for each group was 0.32:0.00:0.10g ;
0.31;0.01:0.10g ; 0.30;0.02;0.10g ; 0.29;0.03:0.10g. Stir until homogeneous then put
into a mold with a diameter of 5 mm and a height of 2 mm which is coated with
celluloid strips then put a 1 kg load, give it a light cured light for 20 seconds. Surface
hardness test using Vickers Hardness Tester. The mean surface hardness results of
RMGIC in groups 1,2,3,4 were 76.88 ± 1.97VHN; 76.71±3.68VHN; 52.69±3.85VHN;
45.96±5.80VHN. Data analysis using one way anova test showed that there was a
significant difference in surface hardness of RMGIC (p≤0.05) after the addition of
nano-hydroxyapatite. There was a decrease in the surface hardness of the SIKMR
group with the addition of nano-hydroxyapatite.
