Research has been carried out on the manufacture of membranes made from chitosan, kaolin and PEG (Poly Ethylene Glycol) which are used as water filter media. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of using a modified chitosan-kaolin membrane with the addition of PEG on the reduction of Fe metal in well water at Bespa Residence Housing. The independent variables in this study were variations in the composition of the mixture of membrane making materials with a ratio of chitosan-kaolin 1:3; 1:2; 1:1; and 2:1 as well as the addition of 0.3 grams of PEG, variations in contact time (20, 40 and 60 minutes), and pressure variations (1.5 and 2 bar). The membrane characterization was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and tensile strength tests. Meanwhile, the membrane performance test was carried out with cross flow reactor. Based on the results of the research, it can be seen that the most optimal flux value produced by the composition of chitosan-kaolin 2:1 is 97.3 L/m2.hour at a pressure of 2 bar. Meanwhile, the best membrane for removing Fe metal was a 1:3 chitosan-kaolin composition at a pressure of 1.5 bar with a rejection value of 96%. It is recommended that the sample (well water) be pre-treated first so that the membrane is not easily fouled during filtration.
