Levulinic acid is a linear C5-alkyl carbon chain known as 4-oxopentanoic
acid or gamma-ketovaleric and 3-acetylpropionic acid. Levulinic acid is a short
chainfatty acid with the C5H8O3 molecular formula. Levulinic acid is listed as a
high value added chemicals in United States. Levulinic acid is obtained from
cellulose biomass under acidic reaction conditions to produce glucose as a form of
levulinic acid. Levulinic acid derivaties have been suggested for the application of
biodiesel and fuel additives, such as gamma-valerolactone, ethyl-levulinate, and
methyl tetrahydrofuran. In addition, levulinic acid is also a promising chemical in
various industries application such as, resins, polymers, plasticizers, rubber,
cosmetics, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.
This factory is designed with a production capacity of 5.500 ton/tahun and
operates for 300 days a year. This factory is planned to be built in KEK Sei
Mangkei, Simalungung Regency, Sumatera Utara. The business entity form of this
factory is planned as a Limited Liability Company with a total 192 employees.
The results of the economic analysis onlevulinic acid factory design from
corncob are as follows:
1. Capital Investment (CI) : Rp. 1.086.384.219.019
2. Total Cost (TC) : Rp. 679.205.048.743
3. Profit Margin (PM) : 34,47%
4. Break Even Point (BEP) : 39 %
5. Return On Investment (ROI) : 25,52%
6. Pay Out Time (POT) : 3 years 19 months 14 days
7. Return On Network (RON) : 42,54 %
8. Internal Rate of Return (IRR): 30,87 %
Based on the results of theeconomic analysis, it can be concluded that “The
Factory of Making Levulinic Acid from Corncob” is feasible to establish.
