dc.description.abstractStainless Steel and NiTi Orthondotic Wires are frequently used for orthodontic treatments. However, the oral cavity contains saliva that will always come into contact with the orthodontic wires. Saliva consists of anorganic componens that can cause corrosion to the wires, thus the need of inhibitors are used to slowdown corrosion rate of the wires. The main objective of this research is to discover the effectiveness of Avocado seed extract (Persea americana Mill.) as a corrosion rate inhibitor of Stainless Steel and NiTi Orthondotic Wires. The type of research conducted was a laboratorical experiment with post test only control group design. The research samples consists of 24 stainless steel orthodontic wires and 24 NiTi American Orthodontics (AO) wires with 0,016 x 0,022 inch in diameter and 4 cm length. Research groups consists of the immersion of artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0,2% mouth wash, artificial saliva and 500 ppm extract, artificial saliva and 1000 ppm extract stored in an incubator for 7 and 14 days at a temperature of 370C. Then, corrosion rate is calculated with the weight loss method. Analysis of the research data results is conducted with Kruskal Wallis test followed by the Mann Whitney test. Kruskal Wallis test results show that Stainless Steel and NiTi wires immersion with the four materials having a significantly different average corrosion rate at 7 and 14 days immersion. Mann Whitney test results reveals there is a significant difference between groups with additional 1000 ppm concentration extract than all control groups. This concludes that Avocado seed extract is indeed effective as a corrosion rate inhibitor of Stainless Steel and NiTi Orthondotic Wires. The greatest inhibition effectiveness was 90% on Stainless Steel wire and 74% on NiTi wire obtained at a concentration of 1000 ppmen_US
