    Abstract
Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is an ulcerated inflammatory condition of the oral mucosa with recurrent episodes. RAS is a self-limiting disease, however the etiology has not been well recognized. Hematinic deficiency appears to be one of the predisposing factors, which can be described by low hemoglobin levels. The relationship between hemoglobin levels and RAS has reported by several studies, although the results was varied. The purpose of this study was to determine correlation between hemoglobin levels with type, number of ulcers and recurrences history of RAS. This was an analytical survey study with a cross sectional approach design. The population were active students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Determination of subjects was carried out by purposive sampling technique. Total 40 subjects were included to this study. The criteria of this group are female RAS patients who have no systemic diseases, not pregnant, not menstruating, not smoking, and not using orthodontic appliances after taking written informed consent, uncooperative subjects during this study were excluded. Data was collected based on anamnesis and clinical examination. Hemoglobin levels are evaluated through the complete blood count. The results were statistically analysed by SPSS with chi-square test. This study shows that there was no significant correlation between hemoglobin levels with type of RAS (p = 0,307) and number of ulcers (p = 0,584), however there was a significant correlation between hemoglobin levels and recurrences history of RAS (p = 0,016). The conclusion of this study shows that there is a correlation between hemoglobin levels and recurrences history of RAS in students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara
