Filling material is a component that influence the performance of a cooling tower,
where the contact surface and period between water and air are extended. One of
the best forms of fill is the inclined-honeycomb form that is made from PVC
lamellas which the price is quite expensive. The aim of this research is to find a
new filling material with reliable effectiveness and affordable cost. The filling
material itself was made from stacks of chopped PVC pipe with the size of ؽ",
ؾ", and Ø1". This paper itself provides the result from the research of Ø1" size
of PVC filling material, while the other sizes are provided by the other members
of this research. This research was conducted by examining some parameters
that indicate the performance of a cooling tower such as range, approach, heat
load and evaporation rate with this non-conventional filling material. The
research show main points are height optimum filling material, weight of filling
material, wet bulb temperature, water debit optimum, air volume and cost of
filling material. So we can see that chopped PVC pipe with the size of ؽ", ؾ",
and Ø1" can be recomanded as a new filling material for cooling tower beside
inclined honey comb filling
