Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is an oral inflammation with characteristics such as recurrent round or oval-shaped ulcers. The etiology of RAS is not known certainly but there are several predisposing factors such as nutritional deficiency and immunological factors. Both of these factors are suspected to be related to nutritional intake which can be known through dietary habits. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between dietary habits and Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) in dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The research design used in this study was an analytical survey with a case control approach. The population of this study was all academic dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara within 2022-2023, with a total of 764 active students who were then selected based on the inclusion criteria which included female dental students who have no systemic diseases or currently taking any medication, not menstruating, not pregnant, not using orthodontic appliances or dentures, agreeing to take part in this study, and the exclusion criteria which included uncooperative subject. Total of sample in this study was 60 respondents. Data related to RAS was collected based on clinical examination and data related to dietary habits was collected based on questionnaires which were carried out directly by the respondents. Data processing and analysis were carried out with univariate analysis and bivariate analysis (Chi-square test). The results based on the Chi-square test were obtained: the correlation between the amount of food and RAS (p = 0.006), the correlation between the type of food and RAS (p = 0.779), and the correlation between dietary habits and RAS (p = 0.026). The conclusion of this study shows that there is a
correlation between dietary habits and Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) in dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara.
