The objective of this thesis is to determine the role and the eminence of Medan Backpacker Community's Facebook and Instagram in supporting tourism promotion in North Sumatera, and also to determine the role of Medan Backpacker Community's Facebook and Instagram collaboration in supporting tourism promotion in North Sumatera. This qualitative descriptive research with deductive models used the theory of computer mediated communication, electronic word of mouth and AIDDA to answer the questions. Result of the study shows that Facebook and Instagram have excellent in ability as a medium for the promotion of tourism Facebook is the main mediated communication of Medan Backpacker community Facebook and Instagram of Medan Backpacker were instrumental in supporting the promotion of tourism in North Sumatra, especially tourist attractions which have not been recognized by the public. Facebook is more interactive as a tools of communication, provides collective and complete information. Instagram provides an attractive image display and specific information on a single image. Collaborate uses of Facebook and Instagram of Medan Backpacker community will strongly support the promotion of tourism in North Sumatra. Display attractions of photo in Instagram as initial information that is able to arouse the attention and interest of tourists, then integrated with Facebook as an interactive mediated communication that is able to provide space for all the information needed by tourists.
