dc.description.abstract | The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the education sector in Indonesia to be
carried out online. Online learning requires adaptation (adjustment) from students. This
study aims to find out the adaptation of sociology students at the University of North
Sumatra to online lectures and find out the obstacles they experience. The research method
used is a descriptive qualitative research method. Data collection techniques using the
method of observation, interviews and documentation. Research informants were
determined by purposive sampling procedure. This research was conducted by interviewing
13 student informants majoring in Sociology, Stambuk 2020-2021. The results of the study
show that the adaptations carried out by these students are (1) Providing facilities and
support facilities for online learning, such as Zoom meeting, Google Clashroom, WhatsApp
Group, Gmeet, E-learning, Google Form, YouTube and other social media. Supporting
facilities are prepared for online learning with mobile phones, laptops, wifi/internet quota,
and books. (2) Providing adequate quotas and internet networks in various ways, (3)
Adapting the technology used and online learning situations, (4) Independent learning and
increasing literacy. The obstacles experienced in online learning during the pandemic were;
(1) Technical constraints and adaptation constraints. Analysis of the theory of adaptation
of students majoring in Sociology to online lectures during the Covid-19 pandemic,
researchers did not find any adaptation methods such as adaptation to innovation,
adaptation to ritualism, adaptation to retreatismand adaptation to rebellion as explained by
Robert K. Merton. The adaptation method carried out by students majoring in sociology is
a conformity adaptation method (a process of adapting or adapting student behavior to
following the methods and goals set by the university by adhering to existing norms or
values and these goals are achieved differently-different for each student to get good grades
Different adaptation methods such as making schedules independently, reading additional
references outside of those provided by lecturers, discussing online with friends through
WhatsApp groups, and reading or watching podcasts on YouTube which can support
