The purpose of this study is to analyze the semiotic spells (mantras)
tradition of (Self-Protection) in the village of Ujung Gading Julu, Padang Lawas
Utara District, Province of Sumatera Utara. This ritual is conducted based on the
request of someone who is after the financial profit and still believes in magic and
asks for it through a dickun (shaman) as his mediation.
This written and oral data employed in this study with descriptive
qualitative method were obtained through library and field researches. This study
was based on the semiotic theory by Charles Sander Peirce.
This Pagar Dri ritual is the one conducted to request safety or protection
from physical crime such as robbery and accident or non-physical one resulted
magical formula or mantras. The data for this study were obtained from the
informants who arc experts in the field of shamanism.
