Hypertension is a persistent blood pressure with systolic blood pressure above 140
mmHg and diastolic blood pressure above 90 mmHg The treatment of
hypertension is highly depend on patients’ skills on self care management to
‘modify and maintain effective behavior. These activities include self management
in prescribed medication, health monitoring, adequate rest, stress management and
prescribed diet and exercises. The purpose of this study was to explore the
experience of patients with hypertension in performing self care management of
blood pressure control in Kabanjahe. This research was a qualitative research with
phenomenological design. It was conducted from June to July, 2016. The
sampling technique used purposive sampling technique with 16. respondents
involved. The data analysis applied was Collaizi method. The result revealed that
there were three themes found regarding the experience of patients with
hypertension in performing self care management of blood pressure control in
Kabenjahe: (1) controlling health life behavior in their daily life, (2) applied
alternative medication in controlling their blood pressure, and (3) attain family
support in controlling their blood pressure. It is recommended that patients with
hypertension can pay attention to self-care management in everyday life - the day,
and the nurse suggested educating self care management to patients with
hypertension.
