dc.description.abstract | Restoring endodontically treated teeth with post has always been challenging for clinicians, especially in cases with flared root canals. Problems which are usually met is mismatch between the shape and size of the post with the root canals, which the gaps are being filled with thick adhesive cement. Polymerization shrinkage of the adhesive resin cement will lead a stress concentration zone which leads to the start of the fracture line. A few techniques for post systems have been used to achieve adaptation in the flared root canals. The aim of this study is to evaluate the fracture resistance and fracture patterns of different fiber post systems in flared root canals after endodontic treatment. Forty human mandibular premolars with orthodontic indications were extracted and divided into four groups. Following that, ferrule was achieved by removing 2 mm from the crown before the cemento-enamel junction. Flared root canals were simulated using tapered diamond burs. Post cementation can be divided into four techniques which are: (A) Single prefabricated glass fiber posts, (B) Combination of prefabricated glass fiber and polyethylene fiber reinforced tape, (C) Accessory post, (D) Anatomical post. All posts were cemented using dual-cured adhesive resin cement. Direct composite resin was used for the core and crown restorations. Fracture resistance was tested with Torsee's Electronic System Universal Testing Machine (Japan). Stress was performed on the axial side of the tooth, with the speed of 0.5 mm/minute until a fracture occurs, fracture pattern is also observed. The data obtained is then statistically tested with one-way ANOVA test, whereas the fracture pattern which contains categorical data is statistically tested with Kruskal- Wallis test. Results from the ANOVA test shows a significant difference in the fracture resistance within the tested groups (p<0.05). The group with the highest fracture resistance is seen the anatomical post, whereas the Kruskal-Wallis test shows that there is no significant difference in the fracture patterns. The fracture patterns which is 100% repairable are shown in combination post and anatomical post groups This study has shown that post adaptation is important for increased fracture resistance with flared root canals. Despite a few fiber post systems did not influence the fracture pattern. | en_US |
