A study on the use of activated diatomae as the adsorbent for nitrogen compounds in the water of Toba Lake has been carried out. The water sample was taken randomly from the beach around of Toba Beach Hotel, Pangambatan, Kecamatan Simanindo Kabupaten Samosir. Diatomea was taken from the village of Tanda Rabun Kecamatan Simanindo was activated by using the solution of 1% HCl. The pH and DO of the water were measured in situ whereas the N-NH,,, N-NO2 and N-NO3 contents were determined spectofotometrically in the laboratory. The water sample was passing through the diatomea column and the flltrat obtained was collected for determination of pH, DO, N-NH,1, N-NO2 and N-NO3 contents. The result obtained showed the decrease of pH valued from pH 9,20 to pH 6,93, the increase DO value from 4,5855 to 4,9746 mg/I, the decrease of N-NH,,from 0,5267 to 0,0577 mg/I, the decrease of N-NO2from 0,0377 to 0,0550 mg/I, and the decrease NNO3from 2,2155 to 1,3174 mg/I. It can be concluded that the diatomea activated with 1% HCl solution can be used as an adsorbent in the water treatment especially for decreasing the nitrogen compound contents.en_US
