dc.description.abstractOne post-instruction for denture wearers is to disinfect their dentures to maintain oral health. There are three methods for denture disinfection: mechanical, chemical, or a combination of the two. The chemical method of disinfection is proven to be better for denture wearers because it has minimal abrasion and is easy to perform daily. Disinfectant materials can use chemical or natural ingredients. Common chemical disinfectants used are 0.2% chlorhexidine, and a natural ingredient that has gained attention in the dental field is the extract of the castor oil plant's leaves (Ricinus communis). A good disinfectant material should be able to kill microorganisms, especially Candida albicans on dentures. Another important consideration is that the disinfectant solution should not cause physical changes to the denture base, such as water absorption and color stability. Prolonged use of chlorhexidine can cause discomfort, such as mucosal irritation, ulceration, changes in taste, and discoloration of teeth and tongue. Therefore, this research uses natural materials, specifically the extract of castor oil plant leaves as a disinfectant material for acrylic resin denture bases. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of disinfection with 50% castor oil plant leaf extract on the color stability and water absorption of heat-polymerized acrylic resin denture bases. The research design is a laboratory experiment with a posttest only control group design. After completing the research design, data were collected and analyzed using univariate analysis and one way ANOVA. The water absorption value of the heat-polymerized acrylic resin denture base after disinfection with 50% castor oil plant leaf extract was 0.3819 ± 0.0288 for 1-year simulation. Thewater absorption value of the heat-polymerized acrylic resin denture base after disinfection with 50% castor oil plant leaf extract was 0.4059 ± 0.0273 for 2-year simulation. The color stability value of the heat-polymerized acrylic resin denture base after disinfection with 50 % castor oil plant leaf extract was 1.50 ± 0.23 for 1-year simulation. The color stability value of the heat-polymerized acrylic resin denture base after disinfection with 50% castor oil plant leaf extract was 2.26 ± 0.75 for 2-year simulation. The one way ANOVA results showed that there was an effect of disinfection with 50% castor oil plant leaf extract on the water absorption of heat-polymerized acrylic resin denture bases for 1-year and 2-year simulations with p=0.004 (p<0.05) and p=0.0049 (p<0.05), respectively. There is also an effect of disinfection with 50% castor oil leaf extract on the color stability of heat-cured acrylic resin denture base after 1-year and 2-year simulated use with p = 0.001 (p < 0.05) and p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), respectively. The results of this study show that disinfection with 50% castor oil leaf extract (Ricinus communis) on heat-cured acrylic resin denture base has higher water absorption and color stability values than chlorhexidine 0,2 %, but the values provided are still clinically acceptable and do not exceed the normal limit of color stability and water absorption for simulation 1-year and 2-year.en_US
