Soft denture liner is a material that forms a cushioned layer between the
hard denture base on the oral mucosa. But, soft denture liner accomponied by several
problems such as the failure bonding between soft denture liner and the denture base,
and the increased sur face roughness causing porosity. Changes in surfaace roughness
cause Candida colonization that compromise the material’s durability. The method that
has been used to prevent Candida is the mechanical method, but this method is not
recommended for soft denture liners because it can cause an increase in surface
roughness. An alternative method to prevent Candida colonization was incorporating
natural anti fungal agent, namely Origanum vulgare essential oil gel with concentration
3,12% and 6,25%. This study aims to determine the effect of addition Origanum
vulgare essential oil gel with different concentrations and usage duration on surface
roughness of auto-polymerized silicone soft denture liner. The sample used in this
study was auto-polymerized silicone soft denture liner which was made using a
cylindrical metal mold with a diameter of 15 mm and thickness of 10 mm. A total of
40 samples (N=40) were divided into 8 groups (n=5). Samples were placed in an
incubator at 37℃ for 7 days and 14 days as a simulation of oral conditions.
Measurement of surface roughness was tested using Profilometer. Data were analyzed
using the univariate test to determine the mean value and standard deviation of surface
roughness for each group. One-way Anova to determine the effect of addition
Origanum vulgare essential oil gel with concentrations 3,12% and 6,25% based on
usage duration of 7 days on surface roughness of auto-polymerized silicone soft denture
liner. One-way Anova and Dunnett’s T3 to determine the effect of addition Origanum
vulgare essential oil gel with concentrations 3,12% and 6,25% based on usage duration
of 14 days on surface roughness of auto-polymerized silicone soft denture liner. The
result from univariant test was obtained the mean and standard deviation based on 7-
day usage duration in negative control group was 0,16 ± 0,09 μm, the nystatin-added
group was 0,13 ± 0,11 μm, the 3,12% oregano essential oil gel-added group was 0,06
± 0,03 μm and the 6,25% oregano essential oil gel-added group was 0,06 ± 0,007 μm.
The mean and standard deviation based on 14-day usage duration in negative control
group was 0,33 ± 0,07 μm, the nystatin-added group was 0,69 ± 0,21 μm, the 3,12%
oregano essential oil gel-added group was 0,12 ± 0,02 μm and the 6,25% oregano
essential oil gel-added group was 0,08 ± 0,01 μm. Based on one-way Anova analysis
showed there was no effect in the addition of nystatin and Origanum vulgare essential
oil gel with concentration 3,12% and 6,25% based on usage duration of 7 days on
surface roughness of auto-polymerized silicone soft denture liner with pvalue=
0,080(p>0,05). Based on one-way Anova analysis showed there was an effect
in the addition of nystatin and Origanum vulgare essential oil gel with concentration
3,12% and 6,25% based on usage duration of 14 days on surface roughness of autopolymerized
silicone soft denture liner with p-value=0,001 (p<0,05). From the results
on this study it can be concluded that the addition of Origanum vulgare essential oil
gel with concentration 6.25% for 14 days it is recommended to use auto-polymerized
silicone soft denture liners because it can reduce surface roughness
