Chitosan has many functions developed in various fields and products. One of
the interesting functional properties of chitosan to develop is its nature as an
antioxidant that can stabilize free radicals that cause dry skin and also as an
antibacterial. Damage to the skin can be reduced by using hand and body cream
because it can lock moisture in the skin. This study aims to formulate a hand and body
cream where the concentration of chitosan oligosaccharides added is different, namely
1%, 1.5%, and 2% which can inhibit the activity of gram-positive bacteria
Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Determination of stability and
optimum formula is obtained from the evaluation of hand and body cream which
includes homogeneity test, pH test, viscosity test, emulsion stability test, hedonic test,
irritation test, and antibacterial test. The results of the study for 8 weeks showed that
the hand and body cream met the requirements of the homogeneity test, the pH test (4.5-
6.5) on SNI No. 06-2588, the viscosity test (2,000-50,000 cP) had increased and met the
requirements of SNI 16-4399-199. For the highest antibacterial activity test at a
chitosan concentration of 2% for Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria with an inhibitory
zone diameter of 7.7 mm and for Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with an inhibitory zone
diameter of 8.6 mm.
