    Abstract
Purpose: To determine the development of hearing and speech in congenitally deaffness patients after cochlear implantation based on free field testing and the LittlEARS questionnaire (LEAQ). Method: This study is an analytical observational study, with a retrospective cohort approach to assess the development of hearing and speech in congenitally deaf patients after cochlear implantation. This study was conducted in two hearing centers in Medan that have AVT facilities. The population consisted of all patients who underwent cochlear implantation surgery in Medan city from 2018-2020, totaling 37 people, divided into two groups: < 3 years 6 months and ≥ 3 years 6 months. Then, data on free field testing and the LittlEARS questionnaire (LEAQ) were collected from these patients at two hearing centers in Medan. Results: Based on gender, the majority were male with 20 people (54.1%). Based on age, the majority were ≥ 3 years 6 months with 20 people (54.1%). The mean age was 3 years 9 months, with the youngest age being 1 year 5 months and the oldest age being 9 years 3 months. There was no difference in hearing threshold based on age at the time of cochlear implantation, evaluated by free field testing at 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months post-implantation (p> 0.05), and there was no difference in speech ability based on age at the time of cochlear implantation monitored by LEAQ at 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months post-implantation (p> 0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the development of hearing and speech in post-implantation patients compared between the two groups. However, there was significant development in hearing and speech in each group.
