Jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba Miq.) is a fast growing species used as
industrial raw material. Information on the growth and quality of Jabon wood is
needed to improve product quality and the suitability of wood properties
according to the needs of the growing industry in Indonesia. The purpose of this
study was to evaluate tree growth and estimate the quality of Jabon wood in the
Arboretum of the University of North Sumatra and Citra Pesona Ladangku. The
research was conducted by census. Parameters measured for growth characters
were total height, branch-free height (TBC), stem diameter and crown diameter.
Estimation of wood quality is carried out by testing the physical properties of the
core samples. The results of growth measurements at the Arboretum location of
the University of North Sumatra were that the average stem diameter was 0.40 m,
the total height was 20.21 m, the branch-free height was 15.29 m, and the crown
diameter was 5.03 m. Estimation of wood quality, the average moisture content
was 89.21%, specific gravity was 0.42, density was 0.72 gr/cm3. The results of
growth measurements at the Citra Pesona Ladangku location were that the
average stem diameter was 0.42 m, the total height was 19.54 m, the branch-free
height was 12.34 m, and the crown diameter was 5.09 m. For the estimation of
wood quality, the average moisture content was 93.16%, specific gravity was
0.43, density was 0.80 gr/cm3. The conclusion of this study is that the evaluation
results for the growth and estimation of wood quality at the locations of the
Arboretum of the University of North Sumatra and Citra Pesona Ladangku show
that there are variations in the growth and properties of wood in each location.
Where, in growth there is a significant difference from the yield which is found in
the parameter of branch-free height which is 15.29 m and 12.34 m, and the water
content is 89.21% and 93.16%. Likewise in the nature of wood which occurs at a
wood density of 0.72 gr/cm3 day 0.80 gr/cm3.
