Objective: To analyze the neurotropic effect of coenzyme Q10 with methylprednisolone and curcumin with methylprednisolone on retinal ganglion cell density in a rat model of methanol-induced toxic optic neuropathy Methods: Laboratory experimental research with a randomized post-test only control group in a laboratory experimental design. The subjects were 25 male Winstar rats randomly divided into 5 groups: K1 (rats fed only pellets), K2 (methanol), P1 (methanol and methylprednisolone), P2 (methanol, coenzyme Q10 and methylprednisolone). P3 (methanol, curcumin, and methylprednisolone) data were analyzed by One-Way ANOVA test, Kruskal Wallis test, and posthoc test. The P value <0.05 was determined for each statistically significant test. Results: The highest RGC density was at P3 (average 62 in 3 fields of view), while the lowest was at K2 (average 34 in 3 fields of view). The ANOVA test showed that there were differences in RGC density values between the five groups (p 0.002). The posthoc test showed a significant difference in RGC at K1 and K2 (p 0.001) but not at P1, P2, or P3 (p 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of both coenzyme Q10 and methylprednisolone, as well as curcumin and methylprednisolone, can maintain the density of the retinal cell ganglion, with the combination of curcumin and methylprednisolone showing better results.
