Abstract

1his research discusses developmen,t contribution, and background oJ the establlshment of Sibolga Nauli Traditional Market in 1979 - 2007. It aims is to explain background of the market, its development (1979-2007), and its contribution to the local people. The research uses a historical approach (heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography). The data are collected through library research, books, documents, reports.from the Sibolga Central Bureau of Statistics, and field research results obtained from observation and interviews with primary and secondary source-persons. The research findings demonstrate that the traditional market in Sibolga is established by the government in order to make market more strategic and wider for buyers and vendors. Sibolga Nauli Traditional Market has developed in term of its facility, infrastructure, and transportation. Numerous vendors come from other regions. The market has its socio­ cultural and educational contribution to the local people in Sibolga, especially to the vendorsand the buyers.
