VSTi (Virtual Studio Technology Instrument) is a virtual instrument that is programmed to resemble the sound of a real instrument. VSTi Malay Gendang can produce all compliment of the Gendang Melayu instrument which can be used through software used to perform all digital music recording activities called Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The purpose of this study to find out how to use VSTi Gendang Melayu and the step of making VSTi Gendang Melayu.The method used in this research is descriptive analysis research method based on the theory of use and function. Alan P Merriam suggests that usage refers to situations where music is used in human action, function related to the reasons for usage and especially the broader purpose. The use of VSTi Gendang Melayu is an effort to maintain cultural stability. The results obtained from this study are that the Malay drum VSTi can be a good alternative if the performance or recording requires the sound of the Malay drum but limitations in the availability of original players or instruments are an obstacle. However, if in a performance that requires acoustic sound and a sense of the player's playing, Gendang Melayu remains the best choice.
