dc.description.abstractcleanser is categorized as chemical and herbal substances. Ideally, denture cleanser should reduce or remove biofilm formation without affect the physical and chemical properties of denture base material. Therefore, World Health Organization suggested the products from animals, plants and mineral. The product used as denture cleanser can be obtained from seed of Ricinus Communis in oil preparations (castor oil). Alkaline peroxide is mostly used and effective in denture cleansing. However, some studies encountered the disadvantage of the oxidative process results in denture cleanser that affect the chemical and physical properties of denture base. Thus, castor oil has been studied as herbal denture cleanser that has a bactericidal and fungicidal effect without changes in water sorption and color stability of denture base. Discoloration of denture base mostly caused by extrinsic factor such as chemical denture cleanser that depends on composition and periode of denture base immersion. Thermoplastic resin is is one of the non metallic material fabricated with injection molding technique that classified as acetal (polyoxymethylene), nylon thermoplastic and polyetheretherketone. Nylon thermoplastic frequently used as the removable partial denture base due to its higher flexural and impact strength, flexibility, aesthetic and comfort. However, high water sorption and low color stability have been recognised as the main problems found in nylon themoplastic material. Denture base prone to discolored after periode of certain times that cause aesthetic problem. Recently, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been introduced as a denture base material. BioHPP (high performance polymer) is thermoplastic polymer based on Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) that contains 20% ceramic microparticles fillers with a particle size about 0,3- 0,5 microns. BioHPP has good color stability and low water sorption. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of immersion of nylon thermoplastic and polyetheretherketone denture base in alkaline peroxide and castor oil denture cleanser on water sorption and color stability. The sample used in this study were nylon thermoplastic and polyetheretherketone which were each immersed in alkaline peroxide and castor oil 10% that was fabricated by mixing Tween 80 emulgator and aquadest. The total sample used for water sorption and color stability measurement were 30 samples that were divided to 15 samples for each group with a diamater of 15 mm and thickness of 1 mm. Then, sample were divided into six groups (n=5), such as nylon thermoplastic and polyetheretherketone were each immersed in alkalin peroxide and castor oil 10% denture cleanser. For water sorption test, all samples were weighed using digital analytical balance for three times in gram unit. Then, the average weight of sample was calculated into percentage using Kazanji and Watkinson method. Color stability test was performed using colorimeter with black background for three times on middle area of sample with appropriate angle of exposure to the sample surface. Calibration was done before measurement according to manifacture instruction. The color changes was measured and recorded in L* a* b*. Then, it was calcukated based on the formula (ΔE). The data collected was then analyzed using unpaired t test which showed that there was significant difference of water sorption and color stability between nylon thermoplastic and polyetheretherketone denture base after immersion in each alkaline peroxide and castor oil 10% denture cleanser with p value =0,0001 (p<0,05). One way anova test showed that there was effect on water sorption and color stability in each nylon thermoplastic and polyethertetherketone after immersion in aquadest, alkaline peroksida and castor oil 10% with p value =0,0001 (p<0,05). Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that castor oil denture cleanser with 10% concentration effective as denture cleanser contents due to its low water sorption and high color stability compared to alkaline peroxide denture clenaser on polyamide nylon and polyethertherketone denture base so that it can be the alternative choice of denture cleanser for patient. Polyetheretherketone denture base may also be suggested for dentist clinical used as denture base material due to its low water sorption and high color stability polyetheretherketone denture base could become the alternative of denture base material due to its good chemical and physical properties. Besides, castor oil 10% denture cleanser can be used as denture cleanser due to its low water sorption and good color stability compared to alkaline peroxide.en_US
