dc.description.abstractThis paper discusses a chant in the form of prayers and mantras called chanting. In Buddhism chanting is a song of praise containing prayers and mantras to the Three Jewels that are read on Buddhist scriptures. The chanting that became the object of the author's research was Mahayana Buddhist chanting in the reading of the Amitabha sutra evening service at the uposatha service at Vihara Ratana Stupa Agung, Sunggal sub-district. The theories used in this research include ceremony theory, semiotic theory by Ferdinan de Saussure, and melodic structure theory by Bruno Nettl. The author uses several structures to analyze the chanting as needed. The method used by the author is a descriptive qualitative method supported by primary and secondary data sources. The results of the research obtained that the recitation of chanting in the sutra performed repeatedly by Mahayana Buddhists is a form of human praise song to Triratna. The purpose of chanting at the uposatha ceremony is also to strengthen faith and determination in developing love, compassion, and equanimity.en_US
