This research is intended to explain why and how Generation Z of Medan
City uses second accounts as a backstage, as well as find out whether all generation Z
of Medan City who have a second Instagram account use it to display the back stage
or another side of themselves. The method used in this study is a descriptive method
with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are carried out through
observation, interviews, and literature studies. Informants in this study were
determined using purposive sampling techniques, namely by interviewing 10
informants who were related to this study. The interpretation of the data in this study
uses Erving Goffman's Dramaturgical Theory to analyze the use of the second
Instagram account as a backstage in Generation Z of Medan City. The results of this
study show that the majority of generation Z use second accounts as a medium to
display the back stage or another side of themselves, which is only followed by the
closest relatives without fear of judgement from others. Generation Z uses the second
account as a place to show another side of itself that cannot be shown to everyone on
the first account, as a place to unwind by viewing the content of fellow second
account users, and also as entertainment sharing hobbies and fun. However, among
the many generation Z who use second accounts as their backstage, there are some
Instagram users who use second account to find out about someone (stalking) and use
it as a backup account from their main account.
