dc.description.abstractHeat cured acrylic resin has been used as dental material for making denture bases more aesthetics characterized by non-toxic and relatively cheap to manufacture and polish, but resistance of fracture. Reinforcing agents such as hydroxyapatite can be added to increase the strength of heat cured acrylic resin, its bioceramic and has similarities with minerals of bone and teeth. Addition of hydroxyapatite is expected to enhance the mechanical properties but not increase water absorption. Water absorption in acrylic resin can affect other characteristic of acrylic resin. This study aims to determine the effect of adding 3%, 4% and 6% hydroxyapatite to heat cured acrylic resin denture base on water absorption. This is a experimental laboratory research with post-test only control group design. The samples were made of heat cured acrylic resin in disk-shaped (50 ± 1 x 0.5 ± 0.05) mm (ISO 1567: 1999). There were 28 samples for 4 groups, A (control), B (3%), C (4%) and D (6%). Each sample was tested for water absorption, data were analyzed with the SPSS application using one-way Anova test and Least Significant Different (LSD) test. The results showed that there was a significant correlation in addition of hydroxyapatite to the heat cured acrylic resin denture base againts water absorption (p < 0.0001). This study also showed that there was a significant difference between the treatment groups in addition of hydroxyapatite to heat cured acrylic resin denture base agains water absorption, groups A - B (p < 0.0001); group A - C (p < 0.0001); group A - D (p < 0.0001); group B - C (p = 0.010); group B - D (p < 0.0001); and group C - D (p < 0.0001). Addition of hydroxyapatite to heat cured acrylic resin can increase the water absorption, therefore it is not recommended.en_US
