dc.description.abstract | Oversharing is a phenomenon of person sharing information excessively or
inappropriately about himself or others, that it can lead negative assumptions. The
behavior of sharing too much information on social media can cause a negative
effect. Therefore, social control is needed in the use of Instagram, especially
among students in Medan city. This study aims to determine the form of student
oversharing behavior on Instagram social media and to determine social control
over student oversharing behavior on Instagram. The research method used is
descriptive qualitative research method which aims to accurately describe the
characteristics of an individual or the condition of a particular group in society.
The data collection technique was conducted by observation, interviews, and
documentation. Theory used in this study is social control theory by Travis
Hirschi. The results of this study it can be concluded that there are several forms
of student oversharing behavior on social media Instagram. Then it was found that
family, religion, education, norms and values in a community play a role in
providing preventive social control as well as repressive social control on student
oversharing behavior on social media Instagram. Preventive social control is in
the form of appeals or preventive measures taken to prevent oversharing behavior.
Repressive social control is in the form of punishment after oversharing occurs on
Instagram. Attachment, commitment, involvement, and beliefs are part of social
control and can be assumed to be the cause of oversharing behavior on Instagram
