Gastrodiplomacy is an important part of public diplomacy because it is a subtle
way to increase appreciation, build mutual understanding and improve the
nation's image. Gastrodiplomacy is part of cultural diplomacy through the
introduction of a culture of eating. The rich variety of food, privileges and
enjoyment of a nation's food is the main attraction of a country in the eyes of the
international community. The research method used includes collecting sources
and data explaining the policies of the Japanese Government in supporting
gastrodiplomacy through related journal articles, the of icial website of the
Ministry of Foreign Af airs of Japan, public diplomacy books, soft power. Conducted interviews with the Japanese Consulate General in Medan and
conducted data elaboration in the research. Over the past few years, Japanese
restaurants have been growing very fast around the world, increasing from
24,000 restaurants in 2006 to 117,568 restaurants in 2017. Thus the Japanese
Restaurant Abroad (JRO) program continues to develop in carrying out various
strategies to promote Japanese restaurants outside country, especially to support
the expansion of Japan's food industry, and export agricultural, forestry and
fishery products and products in Japan
