Multiple accounts is an Instagram feature that allows users to have two or more
Instagram accounts. The second account is utilized differently by different students from
the function of the first account. Instagram is also related to self-display or self representation that you want to display. This study aims to find out how sociology
students self-represent who have 2 Instagram accounts. The research method used is a
qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection
techniques using the method of observation, interviews and documentation. Research
informants were determined by purposive sampling procedure. This research was
conducted by interviewing 11 informants. The theory used in this study is the theory of
Dramaturgy by Erving Goffman, the results of the study show that students majoring in
sociology use first accounts for communication, seeking information such as work, sosial,
economic, political, cultural, fashion, and lifestyle. The second account is used as an
account for fun, entertainment, an alternative to storing photos, exploring what and who
they are interested in and like, funny, to stalking. The form of impression management on
the first account is the appearance or self-representation of wanting to look good, cool,
handsome, fashionable, as an active student on campus, self-image as an elegant and
mysterious woman, and the impression of being an active and accomplished student.
Meanwhile, on the second account, the impression that you want to show is the
impression of what it is, and the actual reality of oneself. The positive impact of using the
second account feature is being freer to express and explore, maintaining privacy,
expressing opinions, posting, getting up to date information and insights, showing true
identity, building self-confidence, without having to think about the negative views of
other people. The negative impact of having a second account feature is not being able to
be confident in public, and using a second account for things that are not good, for
example commenting on an issue and swearing and commenting on SARA. The form of
the front stage on the second account is carried out by selecting an audiensce or
followers, choosing a unique username. The back stage (sosial life and life as a student on
campus), with the second account is shown with the reality of the real self and what is
and part of real life.
