    Abstract
    The design of a plant for the manufacture of vinyl acetate from ethylene acetic acid and oxygen has a production capacity of 21,000 tons/year and operates for 330 days a year. The main process in this factory design consists of three stages, namely the raw material pretreatment stage, the reaction stage, and the product purification stage. In the reaction stage, 1 unit of fixedbed multitube reactor was used which operated at a temperature of 150°C and a pressure of 10 atm. The amount of vinyl acetate produced to reach the annual production capacity is 2,651.5152 kg/hour. The special task that was completed was the detailed engineering design of the reactor. The designed reactor has the following specifications: • Reactor height : 895.1105 in • Reactor gasket diameter: 230.0708 in • Reactor material : Carbon steel SA-240 grade A • Bolt circle diameter : 8.5598 in • Flange outer diameter : 9.8098 in • Material of reactor gasket : Stainless steel • Shell inside diameter (IDS) : 10 in • Outside diameter of tube : 1.25 in • Number of passes : 4 pieces • Number of tubes: 10 pieces • Type of tube : 16 BWG • Pitch (PT) : 1.5625 in square pitch • Tube length : 16 ft • External surface area (a”) : 0.3925 ft2 per lin ft • Baffle spacing : 10.6 in • Clearance (C") : 0.3125in • Pressure drop on the shell : 0.0103 psia • Pressure drop on the tube : 1.0152 psia A factory for manufacturing vinyl acetate from ethylene acetic acid and oxygen is planned to be built in Deli Regency, North Sumatra Province, with a total factory area of 15,774 m2. The water demand for this factory is supplied from the Belawan Bahari River as much as 6,866.87 kg/hour. The planned company organizational form is a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a line and staff organizational structure, and a total of 127 employees. The results of the economic analysis on this factory design are as follows: • Total investment capital : IDR 306,804,898,021 • Production costs: IDR 414,608,340,515 • Sales proceeds: IDR 520,966,800,620 • Net profit : IDR 106,358,460,105 • Profit margin : 20 % • Break even point : 53 % • Return on investment : 24 % • Payout time: 4.14 years • Return on network : 40% • Internal rate of return : 21 % Based on the results of the economic analysis, it can be concluded that a factory for manufacturing vinyl acetate from ethylene acetic acid and oxygen is feasible to establish.
