Kajian Karakteristik Permukiman Batak Toba di Tarutung Tapanuli Utara Studi Kasus : Permukiman Marga Lumban Tobing di Sait Ni Huta

Abstract

The Batak Toba settlement has been widely discussed in previous studies. Most of them were conducted in the lakeside area of Lake Toba, mostly in Samosir region and Toba region, and none has ever been done in Tarutung. Once known as Silindung, Tarutung has a differ geography from those regions near the lakeside. It was also the first Batak Toba settlement area to experience modernization through the introduction of Christianity in 1864. It is believed that both geography and modernization have significant influences on the Batak Toba settlements in Tarutung. This research is to identify characteristics of the Batak Toba settlement in Tarutung. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. This study found that the Toba Batak settlements in Tarutung have a different character from those on the shores of Lake Toba. Elements of the Toba Batak settlement in Tarutung underwent a transformation in form and function. One of the elements with a function that remains and is still relevant to use until the time this research was conducted is alaman.
