The Use of Honorifics By Barack Obama in His Campaign and Presidential Inauguration’s Speeches

The present study aims to find out the honorifics used by Barack Obama in
his two speeches of campaign and two speeches of inauguration. The method
uses is qualitative that is by collecting the honorifics found in the four
speeches. All the honorifics classified based on the types of honorifics they
are naming and title and pronoun. For naming and title there are 38 honorifics
are found in the two speeches of campaign and 24 honorifics are found in the
other two speeches of presidential inauguration. For pronoun, found some
kinds of pronoun such as: subject pronoun, object pronoun, possessive
adjective, possessive pronoun, and reflexive pronoun. The number of
honorifics in presidential campaign is more than the number of honorifics in
presidential inauguration. There are also values in every type of honorifics
used by Barack Obama in his four speeches, such as: respect, intimacy, and
solidarity.
