Of all neurological diseases that can arise in adulthood, stroke is in the first
position in the level of frequency. Many scales are available to measure stroke
severity, including the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). NIHSS
is the most widely used deficit assessment scale in modern neurology. It is known
that there are several laboratory markers that can affect the severity of acute
ischemic stroke, including serum levels of total bilirubin and fibrinogen.
Purpose
To determine the relationship between serum levels of total bilirubin and fibrinogen
with the severity of acute ischemic stroke.
Method
This research is analytical with cross-sectional data collection method. Sampling
was carried out in the inpatient room of RSUP H. Adam Malik Medan. The study
sample was taken as many as 40 subjects with a nonrandom sampling method
consecutively. Data analysis using Chi Square test.
Result
The majority of subjects had an average age of around 56.5 years, with the most
age group aged 51-60 years (32.5%). The gender of the study subjects was mostly
male (60%), educational background, mostly had high school education (40%), and
occupation, most are self-employed (30%). Based on bivariate analysis tests, there
was a significant relationship between total serum bilirubin levels and the severity
of acute phase ischemic stroke (p = 0.009; r = 0.382). There was also an effect of
serum fibrinogen levels on the severity of acute phase ischemic stroke (p = 0.028;
r = 0.328).
Conclusion
Serum levels of total bilirubin and fibrinogen affect the severity of acute ischemic
