Abstract
This thesis is entitled The Shifting Functions and Values of Gion Matsuri in
Japanese Society. this thesis research aims to analyze the shifting functions and
values contained in Gion Matsuri in Japanese society. in writing this thesis the
author used descriptive methods. The descriptive method is a research method that
seeks to provide a systematic and also careful description of the facts and
properties of a particular population. In writing this thesis, the author uses
functional theory from Bronislaw Malinowski and cultural value orientation
theory or also known as cultural value theory. These two theories are used to find
out what functions and values are contained in the Gion Matsuri. In addition, the
author also uses the theory of cultural value shifts to find out what functions and
values have shifted in the Gion Matsuri. The result of this research is that Gion
Matsuri initially functioned to calm the dead due to the plague that occurred in
Japan as a form of gratitude to the gods for calming the spirits and the plague that
occurred in Japan at that time. Then the function shifted to become a means of
entertainment for the Japanese people, as one of cultural tourism and a means of
cultural preservation. The value that shifts in Gion Matsuri is the shift in the value
of gender equality in Japanese society, which initially women were prohibited
from participating in organizing Gion Matsuri because of the belief in the
defilement of wani that cannot be purified, namely the kegare belief.
