In the Karo community there is a wind instrument made of bamboo, namely
Surdam. In the classification of musical instruments by Curt Sachs and
Hornbostel, Surdam's instrument belongs to the type of aerophone with the
specification of an end blown flute consisting of six tone holes, five aligned in
front and one behind. There are characteristics of each type of Surdam as seen
from the physical form or organology of Surdam musical instruments. The
purpose of this research is to describe the process of making Surdam Puntung and
to describe the technique of playing Surdam Puntung by Bangun Tarigan in
Sarimunte Village, Munte District, Karo Regency. The research method used uses
descriptive qualitative methods, field studies and data analysis. In this study the
authors used the theory put forward by Susuma Kashima, that the study of music
can be divided into two perspectives, namely structural studies and functional
studies. The results obtained in the manufacture of surdam butts require several
stages where the selection and determination of each hole and the selection of
bamboo material are needed to determine the desired quality of the surdam. In
playing surdam, a good technique is also needed to get the desired sound quality
of surdam, where in playing surdam it is necessary to hold the surdam as well as
good blowing and breathing techniques, so that the game of surdam is better.
