Abstract
Lubuk Cuik Village is a village in Limapuluh Pesisir District, Batubara Regency, with a tropical climate, most of the people of Lubuk Cuik Village offer a variety of livelihoods such as in the agricultural sector. Red chilies are one of the crops planted by the community to meet their daily needs. The aim of this research is to explain the background of red chili farming in Lubuk Cuik Village, Limapuluh District, and the economic aspects of red chili farming and the contribution of red chili farming to the people of Lubuk Cuik Village from 2006-2012. The method I used in this research is the historical method, namely heuristics, which is the collection of data sources in the form of books, theses, journals and others related to the research topic. After obtaining sources, source criticism or verification is carried out, namely internal criticism and external criticism of the sources obtained. Next, interpretation is the interpretation of historical sources obtained, as well as historiography or writing of the final result which is called a scientific work in the form of a thesis. The results of this research show that in 2006 the majority of people who farmed rice and secondary crops switched to red chili farming, apart from natural factors which caused some agricultural land to experience broken riverbanks which caused the land to flood. As for other factors, such as the profits obtained by the community, it is more profitable to farm red chilies than to farm rice and secondary crops. This can be seen from the changes that occurred in 2012 where the people changed their mindset, namely that farming red chilies can fulfill their daily needs in terms of economic, social and educational needs.
