dc.description.abstractCode switching is language switching in the form of switching language unit sentences from one language to another to expand language style or language variety. Code switching is done intentionally for a specific purpose, code switching occurs because of differences in background between one person and another person. Likewise with code mixing, which is the use of language units from one language to another language to expand language style or variety of language. Code mixing occurs because of differences in background between one person and another. Code switching and code mixing fall into the realm of sociolinguistic studies. Sociolinguistics is the study of language as it relates to society. This research aims to describe the forms of code switching and code mixing that occur between traders and buyers at Gambir Tebing Tinggi Market and to analyze the factors behind the occurrence of code switching and code mixing between traders and buyers at Gambir Tebing Tinggi Market. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The method used in this research uses the listening method and the proficient method. The data analysis technique used in this research is related to contextual analysis, specifically by referring to the concept of speech components as the basis for the design. In order to implement this approach, the utterances obtained from the data collection stage are analyzed based on the social and cultural context whose realization has been stated in the concept of speech components. The results of this research found 20 data in the form of code switching at the sentence level and 18 data in the form of code mixing. The factors causing code switching are the speaker, the interlocutor, the presence of a third person and changes in the topic of conversation. Then, the factors that cause code mixing are the use of popular terms and the interlocutor.en_US
