dc.description.abstractThe chemical industry in Indonesia is a very vital factor which can act as an intermediary between the upstream and downstream industries. One example of a result from the upstream industry is the chemical product propylene glycol. The using of propylene glycol in the industrial sector is very broad, those are in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry sectors. Indonesia is currently importing propylene glycol, and taking into consideration the predictions of imports in the next few years and factories in several countries that are already running, a propylene glycol plant can be established in Indonesia and start operating in 2025. The design of the plant for the manufacture of propylene glycol from propylene oxide using the hydration method is planned to produce with a capacity of 66,000 tons/year and operate for 330 days a year. The design of a plant for the production of propylene glycol using propylene oxide as raw material through a hydration process with a capacity of 66,000 tons/year uses five stages, those are: 1. Raw material storage stage. 2. Raw material mixing stage. 3. Product formation reaction stage. 4. Sulfuric acid catalyst separation stage. 5. Product purification stage. The specific task that is completed is the detailed engineering design of the hydration reactor to make the reaction produce propylene glycol products. The designed reactor has the following specifications: • Reactor Type: Continuous Strirred Tank Reactor (CSTR), tank with bottom and an cap ellipsoidal, provided with a jacket. . • Stirrer Type: Three Blade Propeller. • Diameter of Reactor: 4,02 m. • Height of Reactor: 5,71 m. • Number of Baffles: 4 buah. The planned factory location is in the Karawang Cikampek Industrial Area (KIKC), Cikampek District, Karawang Regency, West Java, Indonesia with an area of 31,565 m2. The employee needed for 200 people with the form of a factory business entity is a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a line and staff organizational structure. The results of the economic evaluation of the design of a plant for the production of propylene glycol using propylene oxide as raw material through a hydration process with a capacity of 66,000 tons/year are as follows: • Capital Investment (CI): Rp 4.299.547.506.401 • Total Cost (TC): Rp. 3.542.837.277.786 • Total Sales : Rp. 4.362.098.881.936 • Net Profit: Rp. 544.863.966.760 • Profit Margin (PM): 17,84 % • Break Even Point (BEP): 30,21 % • Return on Investment (ROI): 12,67 % • Pay Out Time (POT): 7,89 tahun • Return on Network (RON): 21,12 % • Internal Rate of Return (IRR): 18,90 % From the results of the economic evaluation it can be concluded that a plant for producing propylene glycol using the hydration method with a capacity of 66,000 tons/year is reasonable and proper to build.en_US
