Strategi Umat Malim Dalam Mempertahankan Sistem Keyakinannya di Kota Medan (Studi Kasus pada Komplek Istana Parmalim Kota Medan)

Abstract

he purpose of this research is to find out the efforts of the parmalim community to maintain their identity as malim people in the middle of Medan city. The method used in this research is qualitative with data collection techniques through participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The results of this study show that the parmalim community received several forms of discrimination, namely the non-recognition of their identity as adherents of the parmalim religion in the religion column of the KTP, making it difficult for administrative management and the learning process at school. However, parmalim managed to maintain their identity in the plural society of Medan city by building a parmalim palace complex in which there are bale parsantian (house of worship), sopo (meeting place), bale parhobas (preparation place) and dormitory. Conducting religious activities together, and teaching generations of malim through marguru. The analysis of this research found that the religious emotions of the malim are built through belief in the spirits of ancestors and are maintained by continuing to carry out religious activities on Jl. Air Bersih Ujung, namely mararisabtu (worship) and mangan na paet (eating bitter). There is a form of syncretism seen from the word malim which comes from the Arabic word Muallim which means expert in knowledge. The strategy of the malim community in maintaining their identity amid the discrimination they get is to collaborate with the Swawa Institute. This research expects special attention to the Malim people, especially in recognizing their identity in the community. So that it does not provide difficulties for the Malim people to mingle with other communities.
