| dc.description.abstract | The condition of losing all teeth or edentulous has an impact on mastication.
Objectively, masticatory function can be assessed through mastication performance.
The value of mastication performance can be affected by the condition of the salivary
flow rate. Salivary flow rate can be affected by age. Aging results in physiological
changes, such as decreased salivary flow rate and decreased levels of the hormone
estrogen in women. The purpose of this study was to determine the average value of
salivary flow rate and mastication performance in pre-elderly and elderly women who
wear complete dentures at RSGM USU and the relationship between salivary flow rate
and mastication performance in pre-elderly and elderly women who wear complete
dentures. at RSGM USU. The type of research used is descriptive analytic with cross
sectional research design. Salivary flow rate data were obtained using sugar-free
chewing gum and mastication performance using the color mixing method and then
analyzed using ViewGum software. The number of samples was 20 samples and the
data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that the
average salivary flow rate of pre-elderly women wearing complete dentures was 1.88
ml/minute higher than that of the elderly, 1.54 ml/minute, the average masticatory
performance value of pre-elderly women wearing complete dentures was 57.30%
better than elderly 58.10% and there is a relationship between salivary flow rate and
masticatory performance of pre-elderly women (p=0.018) and elderly (p=0.019)
wearers of complete dentures at RSGM USU. It can be concluded that there is a
relationship between salivary flow rate and mastication performance in pre-elderly
women p=0.018 (p<0.05) and elderly p=0.019 (p<0.05) complete denture wearers at
RSGM USU. Complaints of discomfort in the elderly when wearing complete dentures can be educated by dentists to maintain the condition of the salivary flow rate in the
elderly and improve retention problems in complete dentures. | en_US |
