The forest area of North Tapanuli Regency holds the potential for Non- Wood Forest Products (NWFP) which can increase the economic income of the local community. These NWFPs generally value village communities and some don't. Most of the villagers around the forests of North Tapanuli Regency have used NWFPs for generations to fulfill their daily needs. It is feared that the continuous use of NWFPs will lead to over-exploitation, because there are still many parties who do not understand the concept of value from the benefits of NWFPs. The purpose of this research is to assess the benefits of NWFPs and their contribution to the income of rural communities around the forest which can be used as a recommendation for policy makers to allocate NWFPs which are increasingly scarce and distribute the benefits of NWFPs in a fair and maximum way. This research was carried out in 5 sub-districts of North Tapanuli Regency with the consideration that there are still many people who depend on NWFPs in those locations. The research method was carried out by field observations and interviews using questionnaires, with a total sample of 98 respondents. Respondents were collected using purposive sampling method and the calling of respondents was carried out using the snowball technique. Data analysis was carried out using market price appraisal methods and substitute product prices using the Indirect Opportunity Cost technique. The results showed that there were 42 types of NWFPs used by the villagers around the forest. The total economic value of using NWFPs is IDR 12,277,274,450 per year, while the contribution of NWFPs to the income of villagers around the forest is 74.9% of income outside of NWFPs.
