Abstract
One of the health problems undergone by developed and developing countries is degenerative disease such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM). DM patients' good knowledge plays an important role in increasing their compliance with medication and care. Their compliance with taking medicines regularly is very important in preventing DM complications. The research employs an analytical research method with cross-sectional design. Its objective is to find out the correlation between the level of knowledge and medication compliance in DM patients at Meranti Puskesmas (Public Health Center), Asahan Regency. The samples are 85 DM patients, taken by using simple random sampling technique. The gathered data are analyzed by using the chi-square test. The result of the analysis shows that 44 respondents (51.8%) have poor knowledge and 45 respondents (52.9%) do not comply with taking medicines. The result of the chi-square test shows that p-value =0.002 which indicates that there is a correlation between knowledge and medication compliance in DM patients at Meranti Puskesmas, Asahan Regency. It is recommended that the Puskesmas management increase health education about the importance of medication compliance because there are still many DM patients who do not comply with taking medicines.
