An increased number of elderly in Indonesia has an impact on an increase in
health problems due to the aging process. This condition triggers the development
of non-contagious diseases, one of which is high blood pressure (hypertension).
The increase in blood pressure can be affected by numerous factors, such as
excess body weight/obesity. Excess weight is assessed using the body mass index,
which is an indicator to measure nutritional status related to overweight and
underweight. A high body mass index indicates the possibility of an increase in
blood pressure. This study aims to determine the correlation between body mass
index and blood pressure of the elderly at the Integrated Health Post (Posyandu)
of Dataran Tinggi, East Binjai. This is a quantitative Cross Sectional research
design with an analytic observational research type that is carried out in October
2022. The samples employ 39 elderly as the respondents which are taken by the
Accidental Sampling sample technique based on the presence of elderly at
Posyandu. This study uses the Pearson statistical test to show that the results of
the analysis show that the majority of respondents (43.6%) have the category of a
normal body mass index and the category of systolic blood pressure in
hypertension II (59.0%). The results of the correlation analysis (p>0.05) show
that there is no significant correlation between body mass index and blood
pressure of systolic (r=-0.015; p=0.928) and diastolic (r=-0.258; p=0.133).
