Abstract
The therapy of progressive muscle relaxation is a non-pharmacological treatment performed by stretching the muscles and regulating the breathing to create a relaxing sensation. This research aims to see the effects of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on the decrease of blood pressure in elderly with hypertension. Literature review is carried in this research by collecting database from Google Scholar which is then selected based on inclusion criteria that have been determined and required research characteristics. Then, 8 journals which are related and have met the requirements from 2018-2023 are obtained. Based on these 8 articles, it indicates that there is an effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on the decrease of blood pressure in elderly with hypertension. This condition occurs as a result of the decrease in body function and other body organs which can be one of the triggers for hypertension in the elderly. The progressive muscle relaxation therapy is performed by taking a deep breath, stretching the muscles such as the muscles of the face, around the mouth, neck, biceps, shoulders, hands, chest, abdomen, and back until leg. This treatment gives relaxing sensation to the elderly and help lower the blood pressure. This therapy of progressive muscle relaxation should be performed as one of the nursing interventions in lowering blood pressure in elderly with hypertension.
