Introduction: Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS) can be caused by sepsis. Abdominal
Compartment Syndrome is due to intra-abdominal hypertension which is more than 20 mmHg or
abdominal perfusion pressure that less than 60 mmHg. ]Intra-abdominal Hypertension (IAH) and
Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS) are serious causes of morbidity and mortality in
surgical and medical critical patients in the last 10 years. Elevating on intra-abdominal pressure is
an element of routine physiological parameter measurements in critically ill patients and can
indicates prognosis.
Objective: An increase in intra-abdominal pressure will increase gastric residual volume in sepsis
patients in the ICU of Adam Malik Hospital, Medan.
Methods: This study is an analytic study using cross-sectional design to look for the correlation
between intra-abdominal pressure and gastric residual volume in sepsis patients in the ICU. The
research subjects were taken using consecutive sampling technique until the number of research
subjects was met.
Results: the relationship between IAP and GRV obtained an average IAP T0 of 17.7 ± 1.62
associated with a GRV T0 average of 263.75 ± 11.34 and an average IAPT1 of15,7± 1.26 with an
average GRV T1 of243.75± 12.79 obtained a P value <0.05, a significant relationship was
obtained between IAP and GRV with an r value of 0.625 and a positive correlation direction which
means that the higher the IAP value, the higher the GRV value.
Conclusion: There is a correlation between intra-abdominal pressure and gastric residual volume in
sepsis patients in the ICU of Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, with a value of p = 0.001 (p
<0.05).
