Background: Appendicitis usually presents as an acute presentation within 24 hours, but sometimes appears as the complicated condition. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a protein that functions to regulate the differentiation and proliferation of endothelial cells that support the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). VEGF plays a role in continuous tissue repair. This study investigated whether vascular endothelial growth factor level affected the risk of inflammation. Material and Methods: This study was designed as an experimental analytic study that involved twenty four male rabbits weighing for 2.500-3000 g. The appendix lumen was then obstructed with silk no.O. at 18, 24, 36, and 48-hours. Blood samples were taken for serological examination of VEGF using ELISA method. Appendectomy was performed for histopathological examination. Results: There were significant differences in vascular endothelial growth factor levels among histopathological examination, but found no significant differences based on time after the intervention done. Conclusion: Vascular endothelial growth factor level could be a predictive factor for complicated appendicitis in the animal model.en_US
