Introduction: Total thyroidectomy is a common surgical procedure performed on patients with thyroid cancer. It involves the removal of the entire thyroid gland along with the surrounding tissues. After total thyroidectomy, patients often experience inflammation which is the body's natural response to surgery. This inflammation may lead to the release of IL-6 into the blood circulation. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of the proinflammatory cytokines that has an important role in various physiological and pathological processes in the human body. A significant increase in IL-6 levels after thyroidectomy may be an indication of inflammation associated with the surgical process or post-operative complications.
Aim: To analyze the differences interleukin-6 levels before and after total thyroidectomy surgery at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan.
Method: This is an observational analytic study with a quasi-experimental design, pretest-postest one group only design. This study was conducted at the Haji Adam Malik Central General Hospital Medan with a total of 25 patients that met the inclusion criteria from August 2023 to October 2023. The data were collected from laboratory examination results and were then analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: The majority of patients in this study were female (68%) with an average age of 56.8 ± 13.462 years. Majority of patients were also suffering from papillary thyroid carcinoma with a total of 22 people (88%). The fT4 and TSH values in this study were in an average of 1.128 ± 0.212 (0.4 - 1.55) and 11.655 ± 18.834 (0.21 - 65.8) respectively. Lastly, the IL-6 values before and after surgery in this study were 33.46±16.9 (10.1 - 65.4) and 16.612±10.549 (4.78 - 41.9) respectively with a p value of <0.0001 (p<0.05), indicating there is a significant difference of IL-6 values.
Conclusion: There is a significant difference between IL-6 values before and after total thyroidectomy surgery.
