Abstract
This thesis is entitled "Poncan Gadang Island in Sibolga City 1997-2004". The discussion raised how Poncan Island has become a very strategic tourist attraction that brings benefits to the income of the community, including those involved in this marine tourism attraction. Therefore, Poncan Island tourism is very strategic as well as providing economic income for the government. Poncan Gadang Island in Sibolga City has quite a long history. Founded in 1997, Poncan Island has opened its destination, but before that the island had its story, namely the hiding place of Japanese soldiers during the pre-independence period. At that time, Poncan Island was also an area for storing various kinds of ammunition and weapons belonging to the Japanese army. There is also a very long cave on Poncan Island, which is basically the area where not a single public visitor tries to come to the island and even tourists don't visit it. After independence, Poncan Island gradually began to be visited by people to enjoy the atmosphere and beauty of the area. Initially the Sibolga Marina Resort Hotel was founded. After that, in 1995 it was opened publicly and symbolically inaugurated by the second president of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, in Jakarta. In 1997 PT Sibolga Marina Resort experienced the addition of a tourist hotel as a place to stay for visitors or tourists who came to the island.
