dc.description.abstract | The aim of the research is to find out about the Form, Function and Meaning of
Tengkulok (tanjak) in the Asahan Malay Community. This research uses a
qualitative descriptive method which is related to a follow-up method, namely the
field method (field research). The data for this research is tengkulok (climb) and
the data source for this research is based on sources in Asahan. The theories used
in this research are folklore theory and semiotic theory, which includes folklore
as well as signs, icons, indices and symbols. The results of the research show that
the types of Asahan Malay tengkulok consist of five types, namely: ransom takah,
cliff collapsed asahan, bamboo shoots, mumbang split in two, and bugis tak balek.
The shapes in tengkulok are: geometric shapes and fauna shapes. Meanwhile, the
function of this tengkulok is as a head covering and as a differentiator of the
social status of the Asahan Malay community. The meanings found in Asahan
Malay tengkulok are based on their type, namely: revenge no longer has the
meaning of love, Asahan's collapsed cliff has the meaning of humility, bamboo
shoots have the meaning of good hope and good determination, mumbang behalf
has the meaning of courage and authority, bugis tak balek has the meaning of
