This study aims to analyze the use of bamboo and natural iron sand (Fe3O4) as
precursors in preparing a type of magnetic materials. Samples were prepared using
the co-precipitation method. An amount of bamboo charcoal powder was soaked in
phosphoric acid (H3PO4) for 20 hours, and then this soaked powder was mixed with
natural iron sand which had been activated using HCl in constant stirring stirrer at
700 rpm. Until a homogeneous solution was obtained, this solution was continuously
dropped by 1M NaOH, and the resulting solution was calcined at 500oC for 2 hours.
Observation of the crystal structure and phase formed was carried out through the
XRD test, and the appearance of magnetite and hematite phases were analyzed to be
a cubic crystal structure. Morphological characteristics via SEM measurements
showed that Fe3O4 was successfully loaded into the bamboo powder as indicated by
the appearance of white lumps around the bamboo powder, while EDS mapping
confirmed the formation of the Fe element, accounted for 17.96 (wt%). The FTIR
test confirmed the Fe-O functional group at wave numbers 540-650 cm-1. Magnetic
properties using VSM classified the synthesized material into a soft-magnetic
material with a coercivity value of 97 Oe.
