A Description of Hombung as Part of Death Ceremony in Batak Mandailing-Angkola

Abstract

This paper discusses about culture in Mandailing. Mandailing has a very interesting and very sacred tradition of death ceremonies. In the ceremony, There is Hombung as a characteristic. This research uses theories related to death ceremonies in Mandailing. Therefore, the writer of this paper obtained information that Hombung is the highest award in the Mandailing community and is believed to be a vehicle to the upper realm. The writer of this paper finds out what Hombung is and how the process of using Hombung is. During the process of writing this paper, the author uses a qualitative method with literature research to collect information with several books, journals, writings and filtering research data related to the problem as a reference.Hombung can be used with various applicable conditions. It is not easy to realize this custom because this ceremony requires several things such as meetings between Mandailing kings, slaughtering a buffalo and high respect for parents. This ceremony is often found in Mandailing with the name horja Siluluton accompanied by gordang sambilan.
